The ohm symbol is made up of three phonemes: A, U and M.

The meaning of the A awakening. This is the state of awakening, vaishvanara. This is the state in which each individual is turned outwards, towards the Other. This is the state of discovery that follows birth. It's also the conscious part of our psychology. The A, therefore, represents the beginning, the birth.

The meaning of the U means dream. This is the dream state (Taijasa), our subconscious. It bridges the gap between deep sleep and wakefulness. Taijasa is the bridge that guides us from birth to death. Here, the individual is turned inward. The U represents life.

The meaning of the M means sleep. This is the state of deep sleep, the psychic unconscious. Here, the individual is in a state of nothingness. He has no dreams or desires; he embodies even the deepest being, the purest version of himself. This part of Om is both the end of something and the beginning of something else. It's both destruction and birth. The M therefore represents the end, death.

The meaning of the point Om: supreme consciousness. The dot above the Om sign represents the state of supreme consciousness. It's called Turiya. It's the point of ultimate concentration, absolute reality, but also absolute silence. This state of "nothingness" represents the ultimate goal for reaching the supreme state of consciousness, Nirvana.

It is important to note that Aum is infinite . It represents the never-ending cycle of life. Although life on Earth is limited, the soul is in perpetual motion, as part of the great invisible whole. Even in death, birth resurfaces. Aum thus signifies past, present and future. It is what has been, what is and what will be or can be.
